C / S Nexans Skagerrak is about to go to sea after completing major modifications and upgrades

The special cable laying ship is extended by 12.5 meters to improve the cable handling capacity

Paris, March 26, 2010-Nexans, a global leader in cables and cable solutions, has successfully completed its large-scale retrofit and upgrade projects, and further enhanced its C / S Nexans Skagerrak submarine cable laying capabilities. C / S Nexans Skagerrak One of the most advanced cable laying vessels in the world. It will soon sail from Cammell Laird Shiprepairers and Shipbuilders Limited shipyard in Birkenhead, UK, to execute a two-month, fast-track follow-up contract worth 8 million euros.

After refitting and upgrading, C / S Nexans Skagerrak's ability to lay out larger-scale power and control cable installation projects has been enhanced to meet the changing needs of customers in the submarine interconnection and oil and gas industries. It also extends the life of the ship and improves its independence at sea.

The project mainly inserts a new prefabricated hull section with a length of 12.5 meters to expand the total length of the ship to 112.25 meters. At the same time, another residential module was installed, increasing the total number of single cabins on the ship to 60, and also included a new work deck and cable handling equipment, which expanded the platform storage area from 900 square meters to 2000 square meters. This upgrade will increase the ship's deadweight from the original 7886 tons to 9373 tons.

Krister Granlie, Managing Director of Nexans ’Control Cables and Submarine High-Voltage Business Group, said:“ Owning and operating your own dedicated cable-laying vessel is an important part of Nexans ’strategy, from design, development, manufacturing to installation, to provide comprehensive subsea projects Services. The major upgrades and modifications of C / S Skagerrak underscore our commitment to the submarine cable industry and ensure that we have sufficient capacity to cope with the growing market trend of increased cable length and increased installation scale. "

The most advanced cable laying ship

C / S Nexans Skagerrak is the first vessel dedicated to transporting and installing submarine high-voltage cables and control cables. So far, there are only two similar ships in the world. The ship has a load capacity of 7000 tons, a diameter of 29 meters, a turntable, computer-based laying control system and a first-class dynamic positioning system. It can also deploy Nexen's professional cable laying operation Capjet ROV trenching system.

C / S Nexans Skagerrak can additionally install cable processing equipment to perform the following operations: cable repair, including underwater cutting and repair of damaged parts; laying two control separation cables at the same time; back-loading laying.

Past and future projects

Nexans implemented C / S Nexans Skagerrak on the basis of long-term lease operation after it was completely purchased in 2006. The ship has participated in many large submarine cable projects, such as: power connection between Spain and Morocco (1997 and 2005); Gemini project in the Gulf of Mexico (1999); Abu Safah project in Saudi Arabia (2004) and The world's longest high-voltage submarine power connection-a 580-km NorNed cable connecting Norway and the Netherlands.

C / S Nexans Skagerrak's first project after sailing from Birkenhead will be the BP's Valhall PFS (power from shore) project in the North Sea. This includes laying 292 kilometers of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables, as well as a separate fiber-optic cable to provide Valhall offshore platforms with Norwegian onshore power generation.

Reasons to choose Cammell Laird Shiprepairers and Shipbuilders Limited

The C / S Nexans Skagerrak upgrade project chose the Cammell Laird shipyard because Nexans believes that the company is a well-known company with a good reputation both technically and financially. Cammell Laird's ability to meet the needs of the Nexans project is also very competitive in terms of price and conditions. In addition, the location of the shipyard in the UK also coincides with the route of C / S Nexans Skagerrak's next North Sea cable laying project.
